On Wednesday, February 9th, all 29 students of Mera Elementary School participated in a special tea ceremony class given by Ms. Yuriko Hamamoto of Nakada, Himi, in order to learn the basics of this ancient art. She is a practitioner of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony.
The lessons took place during normal club activity time. This marks the third year that Ms. Hamamoto has taught the class at Mera Elementary. Himi City’s Coordinator for International Relations, Joseph Kester (age 24), also took part.
Fourth through sixth grade students were able to get hands on with the tea. They mixed it, brought it to classmates in special cups and used polite phrases they had learned, like “douzo” (here you are) and “saki ni hikasete itadakimasu” (I will take your cup for you now).
“There are lots of procedures and they were hard to remember, but it was really fun. I’d love to do it again next year,” laughed sixth grader Haruka Shimizu.
